In what many see as a victory for the voters of Texas, the courts have ruled against the State of Texas’ in their battle over the boundaries used by the GOP led Texas legislators for district maps.They ruled the maps violate the Voting Rights Act, the State of Texas has already indicated they will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In fact, a three judge panel found that the maps were drawn to deliberately discriminate against Hispanic voters while protecting the seats of White GOP elected officials. According to the ruling issued this afternoon the court was “persuaded by the totality of the evidence that the plan was enacted with discriminatory intent.” This could prove troublesome for GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney – and the future of the GOP in Texas, because in a very harsh statement, they judges wrote they found “sufficient evidence to conclude that the Congressional Plan was motivated, at least in part, by discriminatory intent.”
“All three judges said they were overwhelmed with the amount of evidence showing the law was intentionally discriminatory, writing in a footnote that parties ‘have provided more evidence of discriminatory intent than we have space, or need, to address here.’”
