BNSF Railway and UNCF–the United Negro College Fund– the nation’s largest and most effective education organization announced the 2012-13 BNSF Railway Scholarship fund. The scholarships are to reduce financial barriers and help increase access to higher education for low-income college students from cities located within Tarrant County, Texas. Students can attend any UNCF member institution or other four-year accredited U.S. college or university. Scholarships valued up to $2,000 will be awarded to qualifying students beginning with the 2012-13 academic year – spring semester.

“These scholarship funds are vitally important to low-income students – especially those whose college education continues to be threatened by the current economy,” said UNCF’s Area Development Director Diane Stephenson. “UNCF is grateful for BNSF Railway’s long-time partnership that has helped hundred of deserving young people attend college. The BNSF Foundation’s investment towards the advancement of education is playing a critical role in the future economic well-being of our communities and our nation. We commend BNSF for their continued generosity”.

“The BNSF Railway Foundation is proud to support the United Negro College Fund’s proactive efforts to develop our young people and prepare the skilled talent needed to ensure our Nation’s future,” said John Ambler, president of the BNSF Railway Foundation. “By supporting the UNCF’s academic scholarships we can help ensure that outstanding Tarrant County students have the opportunity to realize their full potential.”

Eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, be enrolled full-time at a UNCF or other 4 year fully accredited U.S. college or university, have a financial need and be a resident of Tarrant County, Texas. Applications are online at www.uncf.org. For information about all UNCF scholarship programs visit www.uncf.org.  The deadline to apply for the BNSF Railway Scholarship is Nov. 30, 2012.
