Candle light vigil on Dec. 10 with discussion on taxes & “Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid”

Following Candle Light Vigil Texas Citizens Will Deliver Reports That Detail Impact Cuts Would Have on Texans

On Monday Dec. 10, at 4:30 pm a candle light vigil will be held outside the Dallas Office of Senator John Cornyn, 5001 Spring Valley, Suite 1125E. Leah Witherspoon and members of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans will deliver a report to Sen. Cornyn that details the state, district and county level impact of cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and the negative effect of cutting taxes for the richest 2% for the state and people of Texas. Martina Alvarado will deliver the main points in Spanish.

Importantly, the report includes Leah Witherspoon’s personal story about Social Security and Medicare without which she is certain she would be on the street or worse.

After working for years, just shy of retirement, Leah Witherspoon lost her job. As a widow with no paycheck, she was unable to pay the high cost for her COBRA payments and faced losing her health insurance. Leah faced desperate moments working to make sure she would be able to get the health care she needs for her high blood pressure and diabetes. Thankfully, she was able to scrape through until she turned 65 and was able to enroll in Medicare. Leah can breathe a sigh of relief now that she is receiving both Social Security and Medicare benefits. If these benefits were cut, she would face a future without health care, without any income, without support of her spouse, without hope.

The Candle light vigil and presentation of report detailing need for “Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,” and demand we not cut taxes on the richest 2% will take place on Monday Dec. 10, at 4-6 pm,  outside the Dallas Office of Senator John Cornyn, 5001 Spring Valley, Suite 1125E.
