After presents are given and boxes are unpacked, the boxes themselves become an avenue for thieves to identify potential targets. By recycling boxes at permanent recycling drop-off sites, home owners lower the risk of criminal activity.
The Sustainability & Environmental Services(SES) department, in conjunction with Police, encourages home owners consider using the eight permanent recycling drop-off stations located throughout the Plano. It’s an optional means to recycle any large cardboard boxes from holiday gift-giving.
“Not only is this environmentally friendly, but it supports crime prevention,” said Robert Smouse, manager, SES. “Taking boxes to a recycling station lowers the risk of thieves knowing about new items in the home, such as televisions and computers. Otherwise, once placed outside for collection the boxes serve as an attractive, curbside advertisement for what is inside your home.”
Recycling boxes at the drop-off stations is simple. All unrecyclable material, such as polystyrene (Styrofoam) and plastic wrap, must be removed prior to placing the cardboard in the container. Flatten or break down boxes, along with chipboard packaging, before placing material into the provided containers. No material should be left outside of the container in order to reduce loose debris and accommodate collection services.
