Jesse L. Martin is an American actor. After acting school, Martin was cast in a recurring role on Guiding Light. He hit it big when he landed the role of Tom Collins in the Tony Award–winning musical Rent. He later appeared regularly on Ally McBeal as the boyfriend of the show’s lead character.

In 1999, Martin accepted a role on Law & Order. His next project is a film about Marvin Gaye’s life.
