Lt. Gov. Dewhurst acts above the Law

tdp logoAustin, Texas – Today police released a recording of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst calling law enforcement in an attempt to use his political power to receive special privileges not granted to regular Texans.

In response to learning that a family member of his had been arrested for shoplifting, Dewhurst called the Allen Police Department, introduced himself by making clear his position in government, and requested to speak to the “most senior police office you have there right now.”

After stating that he wouldn’t hold the police office on the phone at fault, Dewhurst repeats numerous times that he does not think the crime occurred. And he wanted to know what he need to do to, “Get her out of jail, post bond, whatever.”

Audio of the call can be found here:

Statement from Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa:

“Once again Lt. Gov. Dewhurst has shown that he thinks he is beyond the rules and laws that govern regular Texans. His call to police shows a clear attempt to use his political position for influence, intimidation, and preferential treatment. That’s just not how things work in Texas. Our political leaders are not above the rest of Texans, nor should they expect to be treated so. Dewhurst has further disrespected the office of the Lt. Governor, and highlights the failure of leadership by those presently in power.”
