DENTON — Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Candace Henslee of Denton as the new student regent for Texas Woman’s University. She will serve a one-year term expiring May 31, 2015.
“As student regent, my focus will be to make sure the student body’s needs are heard, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity,” Ms. Henslee said. “I’m honored to play a small role in the legacy of Texas Woman’s University.”
Ms. Henslee, 21, is a junior on the TWU Denton campus majoring in government with a focus on legal studies. She is a TWU Presidential Scholar, Honors Scholar and Leadership Scholar. A well-known student leader, she serves as president of the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society-Delphi Chapter and as co-chair of the TWU Student Service Fee Allocation Committee. She also serves as a member of the Athenian Honor Society’s Outreach Committee and has been a student representative for the TWU Student Code of Conduct Committee since 2011.
In addition, Ms. Henslee is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, the Omega Rho Alpha English Honor Society and the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society. She also works part time as the study abroad coordinator within the TWU Office of International Education. She graduated as salutatorian from Guyer High School in 2011.
Ms. Henslee will attend her first board meeting as the TWU student regent June 6 at the TWU T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center. She is replacing TWU student regent Joleesia Berry of Dallas.
In 2005, Gov. Perry signed legislation mandating that each public university board of regents include one student member. Student regents have the same powers and duties as the other members of the board, with the exceptions of voting and being counted to determine a quorum.
