Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at Jubilee Theatre

Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award- winning playwright August Wilson was deeply mindful of history when he wrote Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Set in Chicago in the 1920s, it became the first play in what would become his successful mission to create a 10-play cycle chronicling each decade of black life in 20th-century America. The story, which explores the exploitation of blues singer Ma Rainey by white producers, proved a sensation in 1984. Jubilee Theatre artistic director Tre Garrett directs his company’s premiere of the show, which he says inspired him to choose a life in theater.  marainey.jpg.280x280_q85_crop-smart
