Dorris Bogus had no idea when she decided to “commit to be fit” in 1997 that she was heading down a path to start her own fitness and lifestyle women’s wear company. Ironically, she named the company KaMIT (sounds just like commit).
It took a lot of gumption for Dorris to start KaMIT. “I didn’t know how to sew, I had never taken any classes in fashion design, and I knew nothing about the fashion industry. I am self-taught,” Dorris laughed. “But I had a real vision for an upscale line of dual-purpose clothes that busy women could wear many ways throughout the day.”
Dorris’ determination to be an entrepreneur wasn’t even detoured when her corporate gift company fizzled during the economic downturn that followed the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. “I used the equity in my business, my personal savings and family loans to finance the development of KaMIT. I am really thankful that my family has been so supportive as I worked to build my company,” Bogus added.
The one disappointment? “The most difficult aspect of starting this business was not being able to share my vision with some of my friends. I got a lot of negative feedback from the very people that I considered friends. They were telling me I could not do this and that there were enough fitness-wear products out there already. I just distanced myself from those alleged friends and their negative comments and followed my dream.”
Bogus believes there is a market for her concept which simplifies the wardrobe choices of today’s busy woman. One outfit can take a woman to a child’s school conference, shopping, and to the gym because some pieces double as a fitness piece and a fashion piece.
Bogus was so committed to a healthy lifestyle that she got certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as a fitness trainer in2006. Starting a fitness- and lifestyle-wear company satisfied her love for both exercise and enterprise. “Physical fitness and the fitness-wear business just seemed like the ideal combination,” said Dorris Bogus.
