Update on death of suspect in Dallas police custody

dallas police

New update at 7:15 p.m. The update provided late this afternoon mistakenly identified Sergeant Daniel Cordero as the officer who used a TASER during the arrest.  Detectives have identified Police Officer Paul Kessenich as the officer who deployed and used a TASER.

The Dallas Police Department shared information regarding the death of Ross Anthony on June 8. Ross, a 25 year-old black male, who reportedly darted in and out of traffic, was tasered by one of the four responding officers while reportedly resisting arrest.

Numerous citizens called 911 reporting the behavior of Mr. Anthony.  Mr. Anthony was running into the traffic lanes, approaching vehicles and banging on the windows of nearby businesses.  Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics passing by observed this behavior and attempted to assist Mr. Anthony.  He banged his fists on the hood of the ambulance and entered into another citizen’s vehicle as officers arrived on scene.

Officers then attempted to talk Mr. Anthony out of the car.  Mr. Anthony opened the door slightly after a short negotiation and officers were able to grasp him.  Mr. Anthony resisted as officers removed him from the car.  Sergeant Cordero used his TASER at this point.  Mr. Anthony began to show signs of medical distress shortly after he was handcuffed.  The paramedics at the scene then provided immediate medical attention to Mr. Anthony.

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit have interviewed several witnesses to the incident.  The involved officers are scheduled to be interviewed on June 11, 2015.

The officers have been placed on routine Administrative Leave per Departmental policy.
