The African American Steeple Alliance for Mental Health is hosting its first benefit golf tournament on Sept. 12.  The event is scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. at the Bridges Course (Firewheel Golf Park), 1535 E. Brand Road in Garland. Arrangements have been made with the host hotel Hyatt Place Dallas/Garland, 5101 N. George Bush Highway in Garland for event guests who need lodging accommodations for Sept. 11-12.

The African American Steeple Alliance for Mental Health is a non-profit organization.  The Alliance’s goal and mission objectives are focused on educating citizens about mental illness, treatment and research, and preventing economic burdens for individuals who are affected by mental illnesses.  Our organizational vision:  All people deserve access to quality mental health services.  Net proceeds will support our goal, objectives and vision for the African Americans in the Dallas County.
The benefit tournament follows the observance of July 2015 as the National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.  Citizens will be exposed to information that report on the disparities in mental health care for individuals affected by mental illness and their families.
It has been reported that:
·         Mental illness affects one in four American families
·         Minorities are less likely to receive diagnosis and treatment
·         Minorities have limited access to mental health services
·         Minorities often receive poorer quality of mental health care
·         Minorities are underrepresented in mental health research.
