Students Snag Top Finishes at National FCCLA Competition

Irving ISD students brought home a gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference, held July 5-9 in Washington, D.C.

Andrea Garcia and Barbara Rangel of Singley Academy took the gold in entrepreneurship. For participating in the culinary program at Singley for four years, the two earned scholarships to Johnson and Wales University in Denver. Garcia received at least $71,050 and Rangel more than $74,000. Their scholarship amounts are expected to increase as a result of this national competition.

The trio of Emely Alvarenga, Giovanny Mejia and Monica Hernandez of Singley earned a silver medal in applied math for culinary management. Mejia earned at least $48,000 in scholarships to attend Johnson and Wales University in Denver, and Hernandez received $112,600 in scholarships for Johnson and Wales University in Providence.

Hope Cachay, Eileen Romero and Victoria Martinez of Singley won a silver medal in food innovations. These incoming juniors have competed in FCCLA the last two years and qualified for nationals both years.

From Irving High, Yelsie Santiesteban and Ryan Etherington finished with a bronze medal in applied math for culinary management. Stephanie Guerero of Singley also won a bronze medal in the nutrition and wellness competition.
