Dallas Community Groups call on Sheriff Valdez to Stop ICE Interviews

Immigration bill

North Texas Immigration Coalition has found that undocumented immigrants who are being detained at the Dallas County Jail are not being informed of their rights before being turned over to ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement).

Dallas County has allowed for ICE to pull undocumented immigrants from the Dallas County Jail without informing immigrants of their right to remain silent, right to an attorney, or that anything they say and do can be used against them in deportation proceedings.

Dallas Community groups are asking Sheriff Valdez to stop ICE interviews completely by making a procedural change to delay interviews for 8 hours, which would allow for detainees to speak to a magistrate judge to be appointed a lawyer.

The North Texas Immigration Coalition includes ACLU, Texas Organizing Project, North Texas Dream Team, Pueblo Sin Fronteras and Workers Defense Project.
