A Little Elm High School student has died after he and some companions attempted to swim across a relatively small expanse of Lake Lewisville early Friday evening, according to Little Elm Police Chief Rodney Harrison.
“We’re still investigating the scenario that preceded the tragedy,” he said. “Preliminarily, it appears that there were four males, known to each other, who attempted to swim from Little Elm Beach across a cove to the boat ramp. Apparently, one of the young men did not surface.”
Interviews with witnesses indicate that the deceased individual became distressed prior to reaching the ramp. A Little Elm officer was in the vicinity, observed the young man’s distress calls and attempted an in-water rescue. Unfortunately, the individual became submerged and the officer could not locate him.
“At this time, we do not know if there were other circumstances that contributed to this unfortunate tragedy,” said the Chief. Little Elm Fire Rescue and the Lewisville Fire Department dive team, as well as Texas Parks and wildlife Game Wardens assisted in the search and recovery. The remains were located shortly after 9 p.m. under water. The subject had been submerged for about two hours.
The deceased has been identified as Theo Nash, 17, an incoming senior at Little Elm High School. Nash was a member of the school’s football team. Little Elm ISD will have counseling support services available for students today at the Lakeside Middle School Library and the Little Elm High School Library from 9 a.m. to noon.
