North Texas Giving Day Spotlight: Services of Hope, Transformance and A.R.I.S.E.

soh-logo-finalToday is North Texas Giving Day, the one day hundreds of nonprofits across North Texas petitions supporters to make a donation before Midnight. Donations of at least $25 are eligible for matching funds. Below are three local charities serving the Dallas community to consider for a donation.

Services of Hope

For over 10 years Services of Hope has worked with Dallas ISD, charter schools, churches and apartment complexes to provide afterschool programs and summer camps. SOH seeks to transform lives of at-risk youth through literacy, character building skills, and promoting positive parental involvement. SOH targets students at under-performing schools using data driven, pioneering educational programs, and combining community participation with sustainable funding.

In addition, they host monthly food pantries at the afterschool locations and mobile pantries to help working families. However, frequently the largest number of participants are senior citizens on fixed incomes. The food baskets which contains a retail value of $150 worth of groceries and toiletries, is critical to these seniors who are struggling to pay their rent, utilities and medical expenses with an income of less than $800 a month typically.

Transformance

Formerly known as Consumer Credit Counseling, Transformance for over 40 years has provided financial coaching to help consumers learn how to better manage their income, reduce their debt and learn how to set a budget to reach financial goals. Too often workers live from paycheck to paycheck, living in fear of unexpected expenses. There is a misconception that only people with high incomes should focus on trying to establish budgets. However, no matter how much you make, having an effective plan for using your resources properly can benefit anyone. That is why Transformance’s key mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve financial freedom.

One of their recent innovations this year was the launching of a financial app called Pocket Change USA, which we spotlighted earlier this year. To read more and find out how to download the financial literacy app visit here.

ARISE International

According to the Dallas Rape Crisis website over 230,000 Americans age 12 and older are sexually assaulted each year. This translates to a sexual assault occurring every two minutes in the U.S. While many of these victims live to see another day, the mental scars can take far longer than the physical wounds to heal. The Dallas chapter of ARISE International strives to help survivors of sexual violence heal emotionally, socially and spiritually from the devastating effects of inappropriate sexual behavior. ARISE! International, Inc (Adults in Recovery and Informed Against Sexual Exploitation) was founded by Gwendolyn Jones during her journey of recovery which began in 1994 from the effects of sexual violence as an adolescent, by her step-father.

In our local headlines this week we have seen one man convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering a young woman while another man was arrested for raping and burning the body of his victim. While nothing can be done for this women, but with the support of donors, they can continue to help the countless victims throughout Dallas.

Donations are accepted until Midnight for the North Texas Giving Day.
