Irving hosting two Veterans Day events this week

This year, the City of Irving again joins forces with various community organizations to appreciate the men and women of the armed forces.

Veterans Day Ceremony – 11 a.m. Nov. 11
Former Central Library auditorium, 801 W. Irving Blvd.

The Irving Veterans Memorial Park Committee will host a Veterans Day program with music, moments of reflection by military personnel and remarks by city officials. Following, attendees will convene at Veterans Memorial Park, 644 Rock Island Road, to affix a wreath to the Wall of Commemoration.

Attendees can visit the newest statue at the Veterans Memorial Park, “A Mother’s Tear,” placed at the top of the waterfall, depicting a mother with her son and daughter gazing upon the Wall of Commemoration. A polished teardrop signifies the price mothers pay for freedom. The park documents the history of the major U.S. conflicts since the founding of Irving in 1903. For more information, call Irving Parks and Recreation at (972) 721-2501.

Unite for Troops Veterans Day Celebration – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 12
Porter’s Army and Navy, 600 E. Irving Blvd.

Enjoy music, food, games, crafts and more at the Unite for Troops Veterans Day Celebration. All ages can participate in the patriotic/military costume contest. In addition, the American Red Cross will be on-site to receive blood donations.

Care package donations will be accepted at the event (new items, original packaging). Last year, more than 400 care packages were sent to Kandahar, Afghanistan. This year’s wish list includes: batteries, beef jerky, candy, ear plugs, eye drops, granola power bars, handwritten thank-you letters, mixed nuts and playing cards. For more information, visit UniteForTroops.com or call (972) 579-1155.
