Gas leak in Plano leads to evacuations on Thanksgiving

plano fire deptPlano Fire-Rescue received a phone call at 7 a.m. from a resident regarding a strong odor.  The resident went outside her house and reported the odor was even stronger.  Firefighters were dispatched to the scene along with Atmos Energy crews.  The origin of the gas leak is unknown.

The area bordered by the following streets has been evacuated and closed off:

  • Intersection of Alma Drie and Spring Creek Parkway.
  • Rainier Road to the West
  • Chase Oaks Drive to the East
  • Longorn Drive to the North
  • One block South of the Alma/Spring Creek Intersection

Houses on two streets comprising about 50 homes have been evacuated.  Evacuees are meeting at the Southeast corner of Spring Creek and Alma and also at Rainier.

Plano Fire-Rescue are setting up emergency tents to provide temporary shelter.  Arrangements are being made by the City of Plano Emergency Management Department to provide permanent shelter with meals.

Atmos Energy officials on the scene say the leak is likely to force a long-term closure of the area for up to eight hours.
