AUSTIN – Jason Frierson, Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly, has endorsed Texas State Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. Speaker Frierson is the Assemblyman for District 8 in the Nevada State Legislature and has served as Speaker of the Assembly since 2016. He is the first African American to serve as Speaker in Nevada history. Prior to being elected Speaker, Frierson chaired the Nevada Assembly Committee on Judiciary and served as Assistant Majority Leader for the Assembly.
State Representative Eric Johnson was first elected to the Texas Legislature in 2010. If elected Speaker, he would be the youngest person to hold the position since 1973, and he would also be the first African American ever to do so.
Speaker Jason Frierson in a released statement described Johnson as an effective leader.
“As Speaker of the Nevada Assembly, I know what it takes to be an effective leader in these challenging times. I believe Eric Johnson has what it takes, and I am proud to endorse him for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives,” Speaker Frierson stated.
Rep. Eric Johnson welcomed the endorsement of Speaker Frierson in a statement released by his office.
“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of Nevada Speaker Jason Frierson, a respected leader who is moving his state forward by prioritizing the needs of the people of Nevada above all else,” stated Representative Johnson.
“When I am Speaker of the Texas House, I look forward to returning power to the people of Texas by prioritizing their needs above petty, partisan interests,” Johnson added.
