A local citizen committed to getting young people involved in the political process has decided to go where potential young voters are and get them registered. D’Andrala Alexander was concerned that too often no one tries to reach out to youth voters until the stretch run of the campaign.

Rather than lament, she took it upon herself to get involved directly a couple of months ago. Initially, Alexander hosted and will continue to organize voter registration drives at local churches.

“Many are already registered which is a good problem to have,” Alexander points out by phone with the North Dallas Gazette. So she determined she needed to go where the potential young voters are at and have attended several entertainment events.

Next weekend at the big State Fair Classic game featuring Prairie View vs. Grambling, Alexander along with her mother and her prescient chair are hosting a tailgating party where they plan to register voters.

“It just takes five minutes of time, by the time they leave, they will receive a stub, and nothing else is required,” Alexander stated. The voter will receive their registration card in the mail within two weeks. She does not have a specific goal in mind but would be ecstatic to register 100 or more voters before kickoff.

Alexander is seeking Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR), this is an individual who is certified to register individuals to vote on the spot. She has plenty of VDRs for Dallas County and could really use someone from Tarrant or Collin County as the game will feature residents from all over the Metroplex.

Anyone available to volunteer for any time during the tailgating party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside of the Cotton Bowl can contact Alexander at Dandrala.alexander@gmail.com. Coming from a family filled who attended HBCUs (in particular Prarie View), Alexander is providing snacks and drinks for the volunteers.

The deadline to register to vote in the midterms is Oct. 9.

“If you are not at the table, you are on the menu,” is what Alexander tries to help young people understand and encourage them to get involved by voting.
