Sure there was buzz in the press about the new kid on the block going into today’s match at the esteemed Wimbledon, but certainly, no one actually expected Cori Gauff to actually win in her debut against Venus Williams. It day filled with firsts, the win led to a second first-time moment for the young athlete, tears of joy in victory.
“After her win over Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon Monday, 15-year-old Cori Gauff was dealing with that type of emotion.
“It’s the first time I have ever cried after winning a match,” Gauff told Katie Falkingham of the BBC. “I don’t know how to explain how I feel.”
Gauff defeated Williams 6-4, 6-4 to become the youngest woman to win in the first round at Wimbledon since 1991.”
As the two met at the net to shake hands, Williams congratulated the rising star.
“I told her thank you for everything that you did. I wouldn’t be here without you. I always wanted to tell her that,” Gauff shared according to a tweet shared by Wimbledon.
