Hasani Burton

An entrepreneur, Burton, has served on various civic boards within Congressional District 30. If elected, Burton said he would help Americans to gain economic prosperity via legislation. He shares, “Every citizen deserves true representation that is taking their everyday issues, frustrations, and concerns and converting them into legislative solutions.”

Burton says he understands the challenges and need for low-cost medical care, especially after dealing with health insurance problems in 2015, when a drunk driver hit him head-on. Because of his personal experience, he intends on passing legislation that will provide affordable health care for all citizens. His campaign also will zero in on affordable education.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office? specific:
The infrastructure for communication between my office as a Representative in Congress and the constituents would not only create the steady flow of information from the voters but will also allow them to track progress on their issues and what stage of resolution it is in.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
Every citizen deserves true representation that is taking their everyday issues, frustrations, and concerns and converting them into legislative solutions. They also deserve representation that is making plans to pass the torch on to new generations with fresh ideas so that progress can be made and the most pressing issues do not grow beyond the capability of being addressed comprehensively.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?
As a former District Manager for the world’s largest privately-owned medical device company addressing Critical Care and someone who had to deal with health insurance problems in 2015 when a drunk driver ran into me head-on, I understand the challenges of affordable healthcare and solutions. As an entrepreneur with multiple businesses and with 13 years of service to the 30th Congressional District, I understand how to create prosperity through equity with legislation.

3) I will, should the constituents entrust me with their vote, treat the office of the 30th Congressional District as a service, not a career, and nurture the next generations of leadership.

4) I will work towards prosperity through equity at all times for the constituents in every legislative decision we make together.

Barbara Mallory Caraway, Shenita “Shae” Cleveland and U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson are also candidates in this race; however, after numerous opportunities, these candidates did not submit a response.

Roy Williams, Jr. – Courtesy photo

Roy Williams, Jr. – Williams has served more than 20 years with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. He has run for sheriff twice; in 2008 and 2018. His top priorities include collaborating with the City of Dallas officials to reduce violent crime and working with members of the community to restore trust with law enforcement by collaborating with faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, criminal justice professionals, and law enforcement officials. If elected, Williams wants to improve the sheriff department by addressing staffing issues, overtime costs, and the wellness of officers.

“One major problem…is the mismanagement of staffing and its effect on the budget. Spending $14 million in fiscal year 2019 and averaging more [than] $1 million in fiscal year 2020 rests on the backs of tax-paying citizens. This is mismanagement at its core and unacceptable,” Williams said.

If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?

  •         Dallas County Sheriff – 2008, 2018
  •         Dallas County Constable – 2010, 2014

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?

  1.       Collaborate with City of Dallas officials in reducing violent crime.
  2.       Create an atmosphere of trust and competency through collaboration and community outreach with faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, criminal justice professionals, and law enforcement officials.
  3.       Change the culture of the department and improve morale via effective and proven 21st century leadership methods and policing processes.

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
There are numerous areas where the Sheriff’s Department needs to be vastly improved and operated with more efficiency.

Staffing:  currently, there are approximately 200 vacancies department wide (120 detention service officers, 50 deputies/sworn officers, and 30 clerks), which is approximately 10% of the workforce.  This has led to mandatory overtime for an overworked, overtaxed workforce.   While the current administration points to the retirement of the current workforce, the truth of the matter is there is no real system of progressive discipline or accountability, thus leading to officers being terminated for conduct that could be addressed through verbal counseling or a written reprimand.  Termination does not need to be an end-all cure-all.  A focus will be placed on the retention of current personnel as well as recruitment of new personnel.

Overtime:  In FY-19, the department was $14 million over budget in overtime.  They are on pace to match that figure, currently spending more than $1 million per month in overtime.  This is mismanagement at its core and unacceptable.  Remember, this falls on the backs of taxpayers.  I aim to reduce this figure 25-50% by focusing on staffing.

Mental Wellness:  currently, there are no mechanisms in place that addresses the wellness of officers or the workforce.  Sadly, this neglect lead to one deputy, Homero Calderon, taking his life in 2018.  This administration failed him.  This issue will be addressed immediately with the participation in the peer-to-peer network that addresses PTSD and depression among other things.

Book-in/booking:  the department continues to miss the mark with time spent booking in individuals.  A SWOT analysis will determine a plan of action to reduce the wait time for officers and deputies.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
One major problem and its direct impact on Dallas County citizens is the mismanagement of staffing and its effect on the budget.  Spending $14 million in fiscal year 2019 and averaging more that $1 million in fiscal year 2020 rests on the backs of tax paying citizens.  While I am in agreement that the total elimination of all overtime is not likely, it is conceivable that it can be managed more efficiently and effectively.  Any business proprietor would love $1 million monthly to run their business, but the reality is it takes business management skills to run an operation. The absence of this skill set leads to this current state of affairs affecting the Sheriff’s Department.

While the current administration points to her major accomplishments being 1) passing annual jail inspection, 2) becoming CJIS compliant, and 3) removing the status of being an “at risk” academy, the truth of the matter is she deserves true credit for only one of them.  It has been years since the jail failed its annual inspection, and the academy became “at risk” under this administration’s command.  When I served as the assistant training coordinator, I was directly responsible for nine academy classes.  Six of those classes graduated with a 100% pass rate, with one class missing by one cadet, another missing by two, and the third missing the mark by four.  We were recognized as one of the top academies 15 years ago.  Her accomplishment was my standard.  The difference was effective leadership.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
A public official that is competent, knowledgeable, compassionate, and responsive to their needs.  All elected officials are required to be good stewards of tax payers funds and the county’s resources.  We are to be sensitive to the public’s needs.  This includes not responding, “that’s not our job” when a citizen asks how can the Sheriff’s Department assist with the spike in violent crime.  It is vitally important to be abreast of all facets of the department and its functionality.  Collaboration with other law enforcement departments is a necessity.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?
I have the knowledge, skills, and abilities, also known as KSAs, to successfully hold this position and operate the Sheriff’s department.  My 29+ years of law enforcement experience in county government, combined with my BS in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Management and an MS in Organizational Leadership, and my experience as Constable of Precinct 4, an elected office, for two terms (2011-2018) make me uniquely qualified to serve as the next Sheriff of Dallas County.  I hold a Master Peace Officers certification and have completed several leadership courses in an effort to be the best version of myself and represent the citizens and constituents of Dallas County well and without embarrassment.  I am an Ordained Deacon in my church and currently serve or have served in a number of different organizations.  Our son is an Eagle Scout.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific:
I do not shy away from responsibility or accountability.  In fact, I embrace the both and take it personally when my office fails to do something.  I hold myself to a very high standard, and with the election to public office, I expect the public to hold me to that standard.  To whom much is given, much is required.  My motto is, “we will build trust daily, not in a day.”  This comes from John Maxwell’s “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.”

I am running to be the first neuroscientist in U.S. Congressional history. As a resident of TX-24 since 2006, I know firsthand the real-world problems facing the residents of this diverse and vibrant community. As a scientist, teacher, former non-profit executive, and health care industry employee, I am uniquely qualified to address those issues head-on and will bring evidence-based decision-making back to the U.S. Congress.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office?  Yes  If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?  U.S. House of Representatives, TX-24 in 2018.

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?

  • Universal Health Care – We can and must do a better job of ensuring ALL Americans have access to the care they need.
  • Universal Child Care – Childcare rivals the cost of tuition and easing the burden on students to find it will have an unparalleled return on investment.
  • Repairing our crumbling infrastructure – Repairs and new construction not only maintain the safety of our infrastructure, but they also provide immediate jobs, support businesses and help people move about,

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
My primary aim is to return scientifically-sound, fact-based decision making to the U.S. Congress, as well as to restore an atmosphere of dignity and to reestablish an adherence to the rule of law.

If an incumbent, why are you seeking re-election?  What remains to be done? What could you reasonably accomplish in another term?  N/A

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
The issues facing the residents of TX-24 are as broad and diverse as our community itself. As a scientist, I am particularly passionate about any issue for which a return to well-reasoned thinking would bring about a positive change in the lives of our constituents. Whether in the short term by improving access to affordable healthcare, education, housing, and women’s health services or the long term through addressing tax reform, climate change, our crumbling infrastructure, and gun violence reduction.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
The citizens deserve nothing less than an honest leader, a person of integrity, who will put their constituents first when representing the people of TX-24.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?
As a resident of TX-24 since 2006, I know firsthand the real-world problems facing the residents of this diverse and vibrant community. As a scientist, teacher, former non-profit executive, and health care industry employee, I am uniquely qualified to address those issues head-on and am committed to bringing well-reasoned, evidence-based decision-making back to all areas of U.S. Congressional policy.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific: To restore scientific, evidence-based policymaking to the U.S. Congress.

Richard Fleming – Courtesy photo

Richard Fleming – A life-long resident of the Carrollton area, Fleming has dedicated more than 23 years of service to his region, including serving nine years on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District School Board of Trustees. He now wants to continue to serve his community in a significant way by becoming a congressional member of District 24. His top priorities for his campaign include:

  • building upon the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to extend adequate health care to all who want it,
  • re-introducing trade school education to high school students to make them workforce ready, and
  • creating economic opportunity for all

Fleming added, “We should tax the top two-percent of wealthy individuals in America more, with those funds being segregated to a designated fund. Those funds will be dispersed…to help the American people get retrained for a new job skill and/or to provide entrepreneurial training courses for those with aspirations of running their own business.”

Richard Fleming’s Survey Responses

I have previously served 9 years for a total of 3 terms on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD school board. During that period of time, our graduation rate increased from 87% to over 94%. Also, in 2012 I lead an initiative that increased school district revenues by $20 million dollars a year to date.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office? If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)? In 2009 I was elected as the first African American to serve as  School Board trustee for the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD which serves the cities of Dallas, Farmers Branch, Carrollton, Coppell, Addison, Irving las Colinas and Valley Ranch. I served three terms from 2009 to May 2018 on the school board for a total of nine years.

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?
Build upon the Affordable Healthcare Act; we must provide adequate healthcare with pre-existing conditions to all who want it.

Bring back trade schools to the high schools in America, as the data shows that we are leaving some kids behind. In Texas alone, 69% of all high school students are going to the college of those only about half return for their second year.  There are not enough skilled workers for our current workforce needs. The goal in high school should not be preparing all kids for college, we must make our students workforce ready as well. The US Department of Education must drive this initiative nationally.

Creating Economic Opportunity for all. We should tax the top 2% of wealthy individuals in America more, with those funds being segregated to a designated fund. Those funds will be dispersed to the local communities throughout America; to help the American people get retrained for a new job skill and or provide entrepreneurial training courses for those with aspirations of running their own business.

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
I would like to enact term limits for congressional representatives 3 x 4-year terms for a total of 12 years for all elected officials.

Overturn the Citizens United court case so that we can set limits on congressional campaign fundraising.

If an incumbent, why are you seeking re-election?  What remains to be done? What could you reasonably accomplish in another term? I am not an Incumbent.

I have a passion for people and a track record of caring for all our community, my years of service in this North Texas community over the past twenty-three years certainly demonstrates that. I have proven myself as a successful innovator who sees problems and implements solutions. I get this done as a supportive, collaborative leader who maximizes advancement and achievements for all.

My life growing up here has truly been a living, breathing example of the American Dream. From my earliest years living in subsidized housing and on food stamps to becoming a nationally recognized business owner and respected community leader. I am the only candidate in this race with an extensive background serving our constituents.

But, like many people, I see way too many issues and problems that threaten to undermine our way of life and future chances for us all … especially our children!

I am not so confident that the kids today will have the same opportunities that I have had growing up.

That’s why I am running to be the next representative to congress.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
I would base the progress of this administration on how well the lower socio-economics folks are doing.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
Our citizens deserve Honesty, Integrity, Transparency from their congressional representatives.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations? My family has lived six generations in this US Congressional, I not only know about our community and the needs we face, but I also have a lifetime of living, growing, serving, and raising a family in U.S. congressional district.

  • Six generations of my family have lived in this Texas Congressional District 24.
  • I have won more local campaigns than all the other candidates in this race combined.
  • I am the only candidate in this race that has proven that he can beat a Republican in at-large head to head election contest in a mostly Republican district.

What we must realize is that this Congressional District 24 is one of the most educated districts in the US. Therefore, WE SHOULD BE SOLVING PROBLEMS AND NOT THROWING BOMBS!

In 2009,  I was elected to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD school board, I served for 3 terms for a total of 9 years. The CFB graduation rate at the time was 87% which had increased to 94% by 2018. We were able to get 7% more of our kids educated that is what a Progressive Texas looks like educating thousands of more kids.

I have been serving this North Texas community for over 23 years making it the best it can be and should be!

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific: No response given.

Jan McDowell – Courtesy Photo

Jan McDowell – As a candidate, McDowell supports making the tax system fair and establishing an economy that works for everyone. Her top priorities include preserving democracy to ensure checks and balances are explicitly defined in legislation, transitioning from fossil fuels to alternative energy to preserve the environment while creating new jobs, and closing the economic inequality gap. If elected, McDowell says she will fight to improve immigration issues by eliminating the inhumane and illogical policies on immigration.

Unlike the Republican incumbent, Kenny Marchant, McDowell said she plans to be more visible and accessible to constituents. “District 24 has had a “professional ghost” for a congressional representative for 16 years. Not only has he not been accessible to his constituents, but he has been a Trump puppet…I will be a compassionate representative to all constituents, and I will stand up for what is right in our government.”

Jan McDowell’s Survey Responses

I am a CPA, with a financial background that is lacking in Congress, and much needed. I have met my neighbors and I’m ready to represent their needs and values in Washington. And I’m determined to make the tax system fair and the economy works for everyone.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office?  Yes
If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?  I was the Democratic nominee for the TX-24 seat in 2016 and 2018. I’m the candidate who closed the Republican/Democratic gap from 32 points to 3 points over those two cycles, causing the incumbent to decide to retire. I made it look so easy that now several Democrats are running, even moving into the district to do so!

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?
Preserving our democracy, by making sure our checks and balances are spelled out in laws.

Preserving our planet, by a speedy transition from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. This innovation will drive new growth in the jobs market.

Shrinking the economic inequality gap, by tax and economic measures to level the playing field for all.

If successful, what would you do to improve this office? Please be specific:
District 24 has had a “professional ghost” for a Congressional representative for 16 years. Not only has he not been accessible to his constituents, but he has been a Trump puppet, voting along with this reprehensible administration nearly 100% of the time. I prove every day that I will be visible and accessible to the people in this district. I have developed relationships with many different communities, faith groups, and civic leaders, listening to their ideas and concerns. I will be a compassionate representative to all constituents, and I will stand up for what is right in our government.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office? Be specific:
One specific problem that impacts our district is our inhumane and illogical policy on immigration. Because TX24 is home to a large immigrant population, it is critical that I fight to make things right for these families when I go to Washington!

We have all been heartbroken by the images we have seen of children in cages, separated from their families. These actions, as well as our current approach to turning away asylum seekers before they cross the border, are immoral and illegal.

Because the US doesn’t graduate enough science and technology professionals, our corporations must hire foreign-born workers. These companies sponsor the visas for the immigrant employees and their families, giving the employer enormous and sometimes abusive leverage over these skilled workers.

Consider what the restaurant, hotel, construction and farming industries would do without foreign-born labor. My team has talked to local leaders in the construction industry about how the recent deportation scares have slowed Denton County home building progress and driven up costs.

The Trump administration’s draconian actions on immigration have hurt TX24 businesses as well. I met with business owners who have not been able to adequately staff up due to the limits in the numbers of work visas issued each year.

Immigration is a big issue and it impacts us all whether we realize it or not. We must act with compassion toward our neighbors whether they were born here or not. I am eager to create legislation that will keep our borders safe, treat asylum seekers with dignity, strengthen our economy through smart business policy, and keep families together. In Washington, I will work for all TX24 families!

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
When we say our Pledge of Allegiance, that is not a partisan statement. It says that we are a land of Liberty and Justice for All. Citizens deserve for that to be true. From economic justice to criminal justice, to environmental justice, ALL must mean ALL.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?
This election cycle is crucial for bringing integrity and accountability back to our government. The current administration has basically created a playbook for how to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us. My work as a Certified Public Accountant has required the highest level of integrity and compliance with the regulation in order to maintain my license. When voters are considering who they will vote for, they should carefully weigh what they know about the integrity of each candidate running in the Democratic primary. We know that some candidates bring baggage to the race and will be vulnerable running against the Republican in the general election. In order to flip this seat, we must bring our best to that race. We can’t afford to select a Democrat with a concerning background.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate? Be specific:
I have signed a pledge to hold town halls at least quarterly during my time in office. That’s a stark contrast to the incumbent, who held his last Town Hall in August 2009! Yes, that’s 10-1/2 years ago. And I have also pledged to support American Promise in their efforts to enact the 28th Amendment to our Constitution, getting big, dark money out of politics.

Candace Valenzuela – Courtesy Photo

Candace Valenzuela – Since 2017, Valenzuela has served on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Board of Trustees. As a Board of Trustee member, Valenzuela got the opportunity to serve a fifth of District 24 by raising teachers and staff pay, helping to protect schools from gun violence and pushing other initiatives. She is now setting her sights on serving all of District 24 by becoming a congressional representative for this area.

Her top priorities for her campaign include passing comprehensive campaign finance reform and regulating lobbying to end political corruption, expanding the ACA, and addressing income inequality. If elected, Valenzuela says “I will have a robust district office that truly is part of the community. I have already served a fifth of the district on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School Board, where I was able to raise teacher and worker pay, help protect our schools from gun violence and expand STEM and vocational opportunities.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office?  Yes.
If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?  In 2017 I ran for and won a seat on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Board of Trustees by defeating an 18-year incumbent.

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?
My top three priorities are:

  1. Protecting our democracy and ending political corruption by passing comprehensive campaign finance reform that gives the power back to the people and seriously regulates lobbying so that corporations and campaign donors are not the loudest voices in the room when decisions are made;
  2. Making healthcare accessible for everyone by expanding the Affordable Care Act to include a public option for people to buy into Medicare and reduce prescription drug prices; and
  3. Addressing income inequality and the shrinking middle class by addressing the student loan debt crisis and raising the minimum wage to $15.00 per hour.

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
I will improve constituent engagement and responsiveness. I will hold regular town halls throughout the district and employ social media and email newsletters to ensure my constituents know how their congresswoman is working for them. I will have a robust district office that truly is part of the community. Instead of waiting for constituents to contact them, my district office staff and I will seek out constituents in the community and at events to learn about the problems they are experiencing and what policy solutions exist to address those problems. Texas’s 24th is extremely diverse and includes people of many racial and ethnic groups, languages, and cultures. I will work to ensure that my events and communications are accessible to everyone.

If an incumbent, why are you seeking re-election?  What remains to be done? What could you reasonably accomplish in another term? Not applicable.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
I can relate to the problems and progress of many of Texas’s 24th’s constituents because of my own life experiences. My mother and I experienced homelessness when I was a child, and, as an adult, I struggled to afford costly medical bills due to a pre-existing condition. I was able to overcome these problems and progress because of the public education I received. The school was a place where I felt safe and valued because of amazing educators who were committed to helping me succeed. With their support and my hard work, I received a full scholarship to attend a wonderful college. Education has changed my life and has given me the economic stability needed to raise my family.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
The people in Texas’s 24th deserve a representative who reflects their values and lived experiences. Like the majority of the district’s constituents, I am a person of color. My mother is Mexican-American, and my father is African-American. Being both biracial and bicultural makes me uniquely able to relate to lived experiences of many of my constituents. More importantly, my family’s values are inherently Texan: hard-working, independent, and community-oriented. I am also a Christian, and I respect the beliefs of my multi-faith community. My husband and I are raising two young kids and want to create a better world for our boys and their peers where everyone thrives and no one fears hunger or homelessness as I did when I was a child.

They also deserve integrity and effectiveness from their representative. For these reasons, I am not accepting money from corporate PACs and will seek to end big money’s influence and corruption in government. I will go to Washington to fight for my constituents, and I will come home and share what I have been doing. My constituents will not worry that the votes I take are based on campaign donations from corporate interests. They will know I am voting in their interests and why. Having served in elected office on the school board, I have experience advocating for my constituents and working with other elected officials to improve the lives of our community members.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations? I have served in elected office and already have served one-fifth of the district. I was elected to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Board of Trustees in 2017 by defeating an 18-year incumbent. Although it was a nonpartisan race, my opponent was a Republican who had the Republican establishment’s support. I won over conservatives and moderates to win that election because of my honesty and my ability to find common ground with those who see some things differently than I do. My win and my service on the CFBISD Board of Trustees prove that I can not only bring people together and flip this seat, but I can also be the responsive, compassionate, and hardworking elected official that the constituents of Texas’s 24th deserve.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific:
I have promised to hold regular town halls when elected to Congress. Additionally, I am not accepting donations from corporate PACs because I want my constituents to know that all of my votes are with their best interests in mind and not the interests of corporations and lobbyists.

Sam Vega’s Survey Responses

In 50 words or less, relate the knowledge, skills, or experience your candidacy
I have little political experience. I am in the race because the time for half-measures is over. People are suffering and dying. I am part of a movement of bold progressives who are pushing for policies that will change the system that is hurting us.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office?  No.
If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?
Passing Medicare for All, dealing with the Climate Crisis by enacting the Green New Deal, and Wealth Inequality

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
All of congress, this seat included, will be improved by eliminating the rampant corruption going on in our nation’s capital. I vow to fight against that corruption by supporting policies that will end self-dealing, lobbying, and the corporate stronghold in our politics. We need to get money out of politics and start making the government work for working people.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
An elected official is an employee of the people. If voted in, I will do everything in my power to be as transparent as possible so that my constituents know what their employee is getting up to. The problem with this is that everyone has busy lives and most of us have a hard time keeping track of elected officials on top of doing the things that need to be done to survive. I would like to have a staff member that is dedicated to forming quick concise updates to be delivered via social media, emails, and any other way that makes sense. If there is a way to keep the updates in a bite-size headline type form, I think constituents would appreciate that kind of clear brevity.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?
Someone who will fight for their well being and not the well being of the wealthy and their corporations. Someone who cares about their real day-to-day struggles. Someone who wants to make society better. Right now, we have a system that rewards greed and selfishness. We need to change it. We need to invest in ourselves and our future and we need to do it together. We need to stop allowing the wealthy to dictate how the government will work for the people.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?
I will always do what I feel is right and best for everyone and that will require big systemic changes.  That is not to say I will be completely unmoving or uncompromising. I know there is worth in doing something, rather than nothing. We are, however, long past the point where compromising with bad-faith actors and liars is healthy for our democracy. Just to name a few, the types of compromises we have seen just in my lifetime have incarcerated millions of people, bankrupted others because of their health issues, and allowed for pharmaceutical companies to get away with murder. There are real consequences to real people, and I won’t back down when fighting for their well being and happiness.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific:
I promise to fight for the working class by guaranteeing healthcare as a human right and by fighting to make sure our planet is protected for generations to come. We need Medicare for All and the Green New Deal now.

Crystal Fletcher and Kim Olson are also candidates for this race; however, they failed to submit a response.

State Rep. District 109

Christopher L. Graham, Carl O. Sherman Sr., are competing in this race. However, neither candidate chose to submit a completed survey.

District Judge 162nd Court

Maricela Moore – Courtesy Photo

Maricela Moore – Since 2016, Moore has been the leading judge for the 162nd District Court. She is seeking to retain this position in the current election. Her top priority includes “presiding over the court in a fair, efficient, and thoughtful and deliberate manner.” For nearly 20 years, Moore has been a judge and attorney litigating and overseeing a number of civil cases that were filed in the 162nd District Court. If re-elected, Moore would like to update the “jury service process by looking at different technologies that can be implemented to improve the way jurors are summoned and the manner in which the courts communicate with jurors once they are called on to serve.”

Maricela Moore’s Survey Responses

In 50 words or less, relate the knowledge, skills, or experience your candidacy

I have litigated and presided over the kinds of complex civil cases that are filed in the 162nd

District Court. In 2019, I received one of the highest bar poll ratings by the Dallas Bar Association.

In 2019, I was also named the ABOTA Dallas Judge of the Year.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office? If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)?

Yes, I am currently the presiding judge of the 162nd District Court. I was elected to this office in 2016.

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?

  • Preside over the court in a fair manner and treat all litigants the same.
  • Preside over the court in an efficient manner.
  • Preside over the court in a thoughtful and deliberate manner, which requires that I am always prepared and that I have read all of the pleadings and briefs that are presented to me.

If successful, what would you do to improve this office? Please be specific:

I am currently the presiding judge over jury services in the George Allen Courthouse. In that capacity, it has come to my attention that our juror summons practices are outdated and suffer from inefficiency. This causes trial delays and a great burden on those who are called to serve as jurors. I would like to update our jury service process by looking at different technologies that can be implemented to improve the way jurors are summoned and the manner in which the courts communicate with jurors once they are called on to serve.

If an incumbent, why are you seeking re-election? What remains to be done? What could you reasonably accomplish in another term?

The answer to this question is provided in the answer to question number 6.

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office? Be specific:

The courts are open to the public. I invite all those in the community to visit the courts to see how the system works when the presiding judges work hard to bring fairness and experience to the court.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?

The citizens deserve a presiding judge who brings experience litigating and trying cases in the civil district court system to the work of the court. The citizens deserve a public servant who has demonstrated over her career that she has the work ethic, professional ethics, and the knowledge to preside over the complicated cases that this court handles.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?

During my first term as the Presiding Judge of the 162nd District Court, I have proven to be a hard-working, fair, and impartial jurist. For almost twenty years as a judge and as an attorney, I have litigated and presided over the kinds of complex civil cases that are filed in the 162nd District Court. Prior to serving in my current judicial capacity, I practiced commercial and employment litigation with an emphasis on contract, trade secret, and non-competition agreement issues. I am board certified in labor and employment law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. My knowledge of the law and my fair-minded decision-making have been recognized by the legal community. In 2019, I received one of the highest bar poll ratings by the Dallas Bar Association based on the opinion of attorneys who appear in my court. In 2019, I was also named the ABOTA Dallas Judge of the Year. I was also selected by the civil district court judges to be the Presiding Judge over all civil jury services in the George Allen Courthouse. Prior to serving as the Presiding Judge of the 162nd District Court, I received numerous awards for my work as a leader in the legal community. I was named to the list of “Best Lawyers” in the area of labor and employment for the years 2014 to 2016. I was also named by D Magazine as a “Best Lawyer in Dallas” for the years 2014 and 2016. I was named a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers for the years 2014 to

2016, and “Texas Rising Star Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers for the years 2005, and 2011 to 2014. In addition to my leadership in the judiciary, I have also been in a leader in the bar community. In 2019, I served on the Dallas Bar Association Board of Directors. I also previously served as the President of the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association, Dallas Hispanic Law Foundation, and Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas. I am also a member of the Mac Taylor Inn of Court, a Fellow for the Texas Bar Foundation, and a Fellow for the Dallas Bar Foundation.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate? Be specific: Not applicable.

Criminal Court No. 3

Audra Riley – Courtesy Photo

Audra Riley – A criminal defense attorney, Riley seeks to be a fair and impartial judge where justice for all will be a top priority for her. For her campaign, Riley says she will focus on bail reform, rehabilitation, and fair sentencing. More work is needed to reform the current bail system by setting bond amounts at a reasonable amount, according to Riley, particularly for non-violent offenders. If elected, Riley said she would like to implement a second-time offender program for individuals who may have committed a crime as a youth, but years later, have become model citizens, “and then something happens that lands them back into the criminal system, according to Riley. “I would like to help those individuals get back on the right path and give them a chance to get their case dismissed depending on the charge,” she said.

My entire career has been centered around the Criminal Justice System.  I received a BA in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. I worked my way through college as a prison guard at the death row unit in Texas.  I saw the conditions of prison and how prisoners are treated. I then went to Thurgood Marshall School of Law and graduated with Honors. I began my career at the Dallas County DA’s Office upon graduating and stayed there for almost 10 years.  I was the first chair on numerous jury trials including Capital Murder and Child Abuse cases. I am now a Criminal Defense Attorney fighting for the rights of my clients.

Have you previously been a candidate for this or another office?  If “yes,” what year(s) and what office(s)? No

What are your top three (3) priorities in this elective office?
Bail Reform, Rehabilitation and Fair Sentencing

If successful, what would you do to improve this office?  Please be specific:
I would like to implement a “2nd time Offender” program.  I have had clients who were charged with a crime in their younger years. They then go decades being a model citizen and then “something” happens that lands them back into the criminal system.  I would like to help those individuals get back on the right path and give them a chance to get their case dismissed (depending on the charge-nonviolent cases).

How would you relate the problems/progress of this public office?  Be specific:
There is still more work to be done in our bail system.  A bond amount is designed to ensure that a person charged with an offense will return to court and not to be oppressive.  It’s important to me to make sure bond amounts are set at reasonable amounts, especially for non-violent offenders.

What do citizens deserve from this public office?

They deserve someone who will uphold the integrity of the office, follow the law, show compassion when it’s needed, but also hold violent offenders accountable.

How does your character, work ethic or expertise match citizen needs and expectations?

I have a 6-year-old son and he sees his mother get up every morning to work.  I enjoy my work because I love to help people, but it’s a serious job and I take it seriously.  I worked hard to protect the community when I was a Prosecutor and I work just as hard as a Defense Attorney to ensure my client’s rights are protected.  My work ethic will be carried to the bench (if elected) to work just as hard to run an efficient courtroom where Justice for ALL will remain a priority.

What, if any, are your campaign promises/pledges to the electorate?  Be specific:
I promise to be fair and impartial in all cases.  I promise to treat everyone no matter which side you are on with respect.

Alison Grinter Allen and Teresa Jan Hawthorne are running for this office; however, despite multiple requests, neither submitted a completed survey.

Voting in the primaries for these and other candidates is underway during Early Voting this week. Election Day, known as Super Tuesday nationally, is March 3.
