Carrollton Invites Artists to Apply for Third Wave of Storm Drain Art Downtown

CARROLLTON — The City of Carrollton is calling on local artists to “make waves” in Downtown Carrollton by applying for its third annual Storm Drain Art Contest.

Seven artists will be selected to paint storm drain inlets along South Broadway Street. Submissions should highlight one or more of the following themes:

  • Preventing stormwater pollution

  • Maintaining safe drinking water sources and water conservation

  • Protecting natural habitats

The contest is open to Carrollton residents, local organizations, and DFW-area artists.

Applicants must be at least 12 years old. Minors must have a parent or guardian sign a permission waiver, and organizations should list a single contact person. Artists from prior years may reapply, as the selection process remains anonymous.

Each applicant must submit photos of their original design concept. Artwork should be family-friendly, non-commercial, and not mimic graffiti style, as the project also aims to deter vandalism.

“The community has really embraced the program as a unique opportunity to support art in Downtown as well as raise awareness about protecting our water supply,” said Andie McClure, Carrollton Stormwater Coordinator. “We’re excited to open submissions for a third phase and continue growing the program in Carrollton.”

A committee will choose seven winning entries based on design criteria. Winners will be notified ahead of installation in March 2026. Each selected artist will be featured on the City’s website and eligible for the People’s Choice Award, which allows first pick of storm drain locations.

All materials—including eco-friendly acrylic paints, brushes, safety gear, and prep supplies—will be provided. City staff will clean and prime the drains before painting and seal them afterward.

Carrollton’s Storm Drain Art Program aims to raise awareness of stormwater pollution. Rainwater often picks up trash, oil, and debris as it flows into storm drains, carrying pollutants directly to the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. The artwork serves both as a public art display and as a reminder to protect the community’s water resources.

Applications are due Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.
