GISD’s Handley Elementary second graders meet FOX 4 meteorologist

Evan Andrews

How do you predict the weather without using any technology? Second graders at Garland ISD’s Handley Elementary School would notice the clouds, wind, and how they feel. Students learned this technique from FOX 4 news Meteorologist Evan Andrews when he visited the school on December 11 as part of the second grade’s study on weather and air.

“I thought it would be neat for the students to meet a real meteorologist,” said Handley teacher Teresa Martinez. “The more people you can bring in to help kids connect to their studies, makes them that much more rich. To hear Mr. Andrews use familiar vocabulary and see the students correctly answering his questions was really cool.”

Andrews talked to students about the job of a meteorologist and how they could become one. He also gave Handley’s second graders their first on-camera experience by videotaping them saying FOX 4’s slogan, “have you had a good day lately?” The station aired the cameo appearance during its Dec. 12 newscast.

“Here at Handley, we place a big emphasis on what students want to be when they grow up,” said Martinzez. “I’m hoping that this experience will make an impact. Some already said that they want to be a meteorologist. That made everything worth it.”
