Celebrity birthday for Jan.7: Henry Allen and Zora Neale Hurston

Henry Allen

Jazz trumpeter Henry Allen was born on Jan. 7, 1908, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1927, he joined King Oliver’s big band. From 1929–’33 he was in Luis Russell’s band. From 1933–’34, he belonged to Fletcher Henderson’s big band, and was in Mills Blue Rhythm band 1934–’37. He returned to Russell’s band and accompanied Louis Armstrong 1937–’40. Allen died on Apr. 17, 1967 in New York City.

Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston (born Jan. 7, 1891) spent her early adulthood studying at various universities and collecting folklore from the South, the Carribean, and Latin America. She published her findings in Mules and Men. She was a fixture of the Harlem Renaissance, rubbing shoulders with many of its famous writers. In 1937, she published her masterwork of fiction, Their Eyes Were Watching God.
