Born Norwood H. Ewell on Feb. 25, 1918, Barney Ewell first gained notice at Pennsylvania State University, where he won collegiate championships in the 100- and 200- meter sprints.

After serving in the army in World War II, Ewell won three medals at the 1948 Olympics.
