Lead singer Sheila Hutchinson and her sisters Wanda and Jeanette started singing gospel in churches and on radio shows in their native Chicago at an early age under the tutelage of their father, Joe Hutchinson. They enjoyed secular fame locally before signing with Memphis-based Stax/Volt and working with producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter and crashed the soul charts in 1969 with the engaging “So I Can Love You” written by Sheila. When Stax folded in 1975, the group signed with the label of Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, and that association led to their number one pop/R&B hit “Best of My Love” from their hit album “Rejoice”. The release of “Don’t Ask My Neighbors” the second hit single from the album solidified the group as Pop/R&B divas.
White and the Emotions then collaborated on “Boogie Wonderland,” which was rose to number two on the R&B hit list and number six on the pop list. Several albums followed including “New Affair” with the hit single “Turn It Out”. The group signed with Motown and released “If Only I Knew” featuring the single “Miss Your Love”.
Over the years the group wrote and produced a critically acclaimed musical about their life called “Bigger Than Bubblegum”. They were honored by Prestige Entertainment/The Make A Wish Foundation with the Prestige Award. They continue to perform in various cities and venues and their songs have been placed on many motion picture soundtracks such as “Boogie Nights”.
