Plano Fire-Rescue and Plano Police share winter weather safety tips

cb030633Plano Fire-Rescue and Plano Police are the experts who keep the Plano community safe. They would like to share a few safety tips to help you and your family during this winter storm:

  • If your power is out, please do not use fuel-powered generators or heating devices inside to heat your house.  Fuel-powered (gasoline, kerosene, propane) devices produce carbon monoxide which is a very poisonous gas.  It’s known as “the Silent Killer” and can cause death quickly.
  • Tread carefully on ice and snow mix.  The snowy appearance of the ground may not look slippery, but that is not the case.
  • Stay indoors, unless it is absolutely necessary. Most streets are not safe for driving.
  • If you must venture out, make sure you are dressed appropriately in layers with hats and gloves.  Be sure to select footwear that will be less likely to slip in the ice.  High heels and slick-soled shoes are not a good choice.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns to provide light in your home if the power is out.  Candles pose a fire hazard.
  • Use common sense.  If an action (going up or down icy steps, using a certain device to scrape ice, etc) seems dangerous, don’t do it.
  • If possible, check on neighbors and friends, especially elderly ones.  Cold temperatures impact the older and very young first.
