RNC Statement celebrating Juneteenth

RNC Statement Celebrating Juneteenth
juneteenth3WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day released the following statement in celebration of Juneteenth:

“Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates a final end to slavery,” said Chairman Priebus. “We join with everyone across the country who is marking this day. It was a day of great joy 149 years ago, and it remains so today. It’s a time to celebrate freedom, emancipation, and the end of a terrible chapter in our nation’s history.

“On this day in 1865, freedom finally reached the slaves in Texas when federal troops arrived in Galveston. Even though President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, it was years before slavery was fully abolished and black Americans learned of their freedom.

“I wish everyone a happy Juneteenth. However you’re celebrating—with friends or neighbors or at community events—I hope it is a joyful occasion,” said Co-Chairman Day. “Today is also a day to remember our country’s history and honor the countless contributions of black America,” said Co-Chairman Day. “Our past is a reminder that we must constantly strive for a better future and ensure that justice and equal opportunity are available to all.”
