Wee Can Academy, an early childhood development center at the newly opened Dallas Can Academy Grant East campus, honored a long-time supporter of Dallas Can Academies, news journalist Gloria Campos.  The campus’ brand new center is named the Gloria Campos Wee Can Academy.

Wee Can Academies’ mission is to provide a safe, nurturing and educational place for children and to partner with and support families.  The childcare centers enroll children ages six weeks to 12 years for all-day care or afterschool programs.  There are three Wee Can Academies currently in Dallas, with a fourth under construction.

During the ceremony, Campos shared her struggles with a new job in broadcast in a major market city when she first moved to Dallas. She spoke at a high school and a student came up to her and told her that seeing Gloria on the news gave her hope that she could make it as a young Hispanic woman in business. That empowered Gloria to stay and have a purpose she didn’t expect.

She continued to speak to the students in the audience at the dedication telling them about her high school experience.  “Not one person at my high school encouraged me to go to college, but you are among staff and teachers at the Dallas Can Academy that encourage you every day and want you to be a success,” she said.
