L’Oréal USA, one of the country’s leading beauty companies and ESSENCE magazine, the preeminent lifestyle magazine for African-American women, joined forces to present a career workshop at A Place Called Home to 26 ‘tweens, teens and college-aged youth. This outreach is in conjunction with ESSENCE’s 2012 Black Women in Hollywood event saluting five of Hollywood’s most talented women in the week leading up to the Academy Awards.

“Behind the Scenes,” the interactive presentation conducted by Angela Guy, Senior Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion at L’Oréal USA, Antoinette Hamilton, Assistant Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion at L’Oréal USA and Danielle Brown Beauty Director of ESSENCE, offered the youth an inside look at corporate careers in both beauty and publishing.

Concentrating on the tenets of ‘Performance, Image and Exposure,’ these industry powerhouses each outlined their career paths and their respective companies’ core competencies for success.

A Place Called Home is a safe haven in South Central Los Angeles where underserved youth are empowered to take ownership of the quality and direction of their lives through programs in education, arts, and well-being.

L’Oréal USA celebrates a decade of championing Diversity & Inclusion, it seemed fitting that we create a unique opportunity, in cooperation with ESSENCE, to give back to the community,” Ms. Guy said. “By using our combined resources we created a program to educate teens about careers (beyond entertainment) that have connections to Hollywood but that are not immediately obvious, such as careers in marketing, public relations, finance, sales, publishing, and more.”

ESSENCE Beauty Director Danielle Brown said, “The ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood event is a wonderful opportunity for us to provide tangible educational service to youth at A Place Called Home by exposing them to the many careers encompassing the beauty and publishing industries.”

ESSENCE’s 2012 Black Women in Hollywood event honored leading actresses Kerry Washington, Paula Patton, Octavia Spencer and Pam Grier along with executive producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes.
