WASHINGTON, D.C. – CBC Chairman G. K. Butterfield released the following statement in response to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s testimony today before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform regarding the ongoing environmental disaster in the City of Flint, Michigan:

“The city of Flint is in desperate need of federal intervention to repair the harm caused to Flint citizens.  The governor has admitted the harm and numerous missteps which have contributed to the crisis faced by the citizens of Flint.  The lack of oversight and accountability demands a thorough investigation and we are glad to see progress on this matter, particularly as citizens of Flint continue to suffer from state mismanagement.

“We visited the city of Flint and saw the effects on the children with visible scars and those who will have mental health issues and learning disabilities later in life.  Today, I met with citizens from Flint and vowed to continue the fight to assist their community.  Bottled water is a short-term solution for this crisis and I look forward to the work that will be done to make the residents of Flint whole. ”
