Texas Firefighter Summer Games open in Lewisville this weekend

The 2012 Texas Firefighter Summer Games will open Sunday in Lewisville and continue for a week of fierce but friendly competition in dozens of events among more than 2,000 firefighters from around the state.

The games, formerly called the Texas Firefighter Olympics, previously came to Lewisville in 2000, 2005 and 2010. Contests include traditional Olympic-style sports such as softball, soccer, basketball, sand volleyball, archery, golf and powerlifting in addition to more casual sports such as horseshoes, washers, darts, bowling and paintball.

Participants will represent more than 25 departments from across Texas in events held at various locations around Lewisville, including Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park, Lewisville Lake Park, Lewisville Convention Center, Lewisville AMF Lanes and Sneaky Pete’s.

Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, in conjunction with Lewisville Fire Department and Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services, is serving as the 2012 event host.

“The firefighter games are a terrific event to be held in Lewisville, and we’re thrilled that the planning committee and event participants enjoy return visits to our city,” said Lewisville CVB Director James Kunke. “We know from past years that our hotels and restaurants will benefit tremendously from this event next week, as will our retail outlets and entertainment venues.”

Estimated economic impact of the event is expected to exceed $500,000.
