RRC Partners with UT Austin to Engage Students at Geological Society of America Field Trip

AUSTIN, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) partnered with The University of Texas at Austin’s Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (PGE) and the Choose Energy K–12 Outreach Program to host a field trip during the 2025 Geological Society of America (GSA) Annual Meeting.

The event, titled “Energizing the Future: Innovative Energy Production and Environmental Stewardship in Texas,” united RRC staff, teachers, and university students for a hands-on look at the technologies shaping Texas’ energy landscape.

The field trip included interactive lessons on subsurface energy exploration, geology, and environmental practices. Attendees visited active project sites, including a well-plugging operation managed by Nick Harrell, Well Plugging Manager for the San Antonio Oil and Gas District.

Throughout the day, RRC subject matter experts highlighted the agency’s work in energy regulation, environmental protection, and career development. Presentations covered topics such as well-plugging initiatives, waste disposal, produced water management, and the drilling permit process.

RRC staff also emphasized the agency’s ongoing efforts to safeguard Texas’ natural resources and the many career pathways available in geology and engineering.

“The RRC is grateful to the operators who provided site access and to UT Austin’s PGE Department for helping inspire the next generation of energy professionals,” the agency said in a statement.
