Texas voters made history by approving Proposition 4, a major water initiative. The plan ensures a $1 billion yearly investment for 20 years. It funds critical infrastructure and conservation projects across Texas, strengthening both rural and urban communities.
Additionally, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and National Wildlife Federation (NWF) led a major awareness push. EDF Action and NWF Action Fund invested $700,000 to inform voters through education and outreach efforts. Their teamwork played a key role in securing the measure’s passage.
“Texas can’t afford to waste water — or time,” said Jennifer Walker of NWF Action Fund. “Investing in water means fewer leaks and safer drinking water.”
She added, “It also means protecting resources and building a strong economy for Texas families.”
Furthermore, Proposition 4 funds repairing pipes, upgrading treatment plants, and developing new water supplies. It supports conservation technology in cities and rural towns, many facing limited budgets and outdated systems.
“Water isn’t just about turning on the tap,” said Vanessa Puig-Williams of EDF. “It’s about rivers, wetlands, and wildlife that define Texas.”
She continued, “Our campaign united leaders and residents around securing the state’s water future.”
Finally, Texas’s population is expected to nearly double by 2050, increasing demand for water access. Proposition 4’s funding ensures sustainable supply for future generations and supports resilience amid climate challenges.
EDF Action and NWF Action Fund praised Texans who voted yes on Proposition 4. They also thanked utilities, farmers, policy experts, conservationists, and advocates for pushing Texas toward a stronger and safer water future.
