Dallas County to Honor Craig Watkins with Courthouse Dedication

Dallas County invites residents to a historic event. The county will unveil a commemorative bust honoring the late District Attorney Craig Watkins. The ceremony begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the Central Jury Room of the Frank Crowley Courthouse at 133 N. Riverfront Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75207.

Moreover, the event marks a milestone in Dallas County history. Craig Watkins became the first African American District Attorney elected in Dallas County and in Texas. He served from 2007 until 2015. During his tenure, he achieved a 99.4% conviction rate while prioritizing child sexual abuse cases.

Furthermore, Watkins was born on November 16, 1967, in Dallas, Texas, to Richard and Paula Watkins. He graduated from David W. Carter High School in 1986. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Prairie View A&M University in 1990. Then, he obtained his Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in 1994.

Additionally, Watkins worked to correct wrongful convictions through DNA testing and evidence review. He led the establishment of the Conviction Integrity Unit, which earned national recognition. The CIU investigates cases of actual innocence and wrongful convictions. It also serves as the liaison with the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

Importantly, Watkins’ leadership led to the release of numerous innocent men and women. His vision reshaped how prosecutors view justice and accountability in Texas.

Finally, Dallas County invites the community to join this momentous occasion. The event will celebrate Watkins’ 58th birthday and lasting impact on Dallas County’s legal history. Guests will include members of the Dallas County Commissioner Court and the Honorable John Creuzot, Dallas County District Attorney. The ceremony will be held Friday, November 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Central Jury Room of the Frank Crowley Courthouse, 133 N. Riverfront Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75207.
