Mitchell-Brooks celebrates 20 years at helm of Dallas Urban League

Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks believes that when citizens in this community are faced with unemployment, homelessness, educational and other barriers, the Urban League must step up to create positive solutions for all its citizens. For 20 years, her message has resonated throughout Dallas County as thousands of citizens continue to participate in the League’s programs and services.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Urban League Board of Trustees, city and community leaders, staff, friends and family gave a 20th anniversary surprise celebration for Mitchell-Brooks as president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Dallas through speeches, toasts and roasts.

“Brooks has pushed through every obstacle to ensure that the Urban League programs are available to all citizens,” said Wright Lassiter, Urban League board emeritus, “but most importantly, in 1999 her tireless efforts paid off when the League moved into its permanent headquarters. Her vision now focuses on a new Trades/Technical Skills Training Center which will become a reality over the next year.”

Stan Levenson, current Urban League board president cited Brooks for her many accomplishments and praised her for her leadership. “She continues to see beyond the present and look to the future as she moves the organization to the next level,” he said.

Accolades were also given by community activist Edna Pemberton; radio personality Diane Gibson; her sister Billie Roberts; Constable Derrick Evans; and Urban League COO Seifu Yigezu.

Responding to all the accolades, Brooks underlined the fact that it took teamwork to bring about the accomplishments and thanked all those who have provided support to her throughout her tenure as president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Dallas.

Proclamations were read and gifts were presented including a portrait by artist La Tisha Neal and original artwork by world renowned artist Frank Frazier.
