Parkland burn camp to host benefit golf tournament

indexThe 12th annual Camp I-Thonka-Chi Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Monday, Sept. 30 at Timarron Country Club in Southlake. Tournament proceeds help children with burn injuries attend Parkland’s Camp I-Thonka-Chi, a summer camp designed especially for them.

This one-day tournament, the camp’s largest fundraiser each year, is an 18-hole best ball scramble with 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun starts. The event also includes a silent auction throughout the day and a dinner to honor tournament winners and sponsors at 6:30 p.m. in the clubhouse.

Camp I-Thonka-Chi, which is Choctaw for “a place that makes one strong or fearless, not afraid to face life,” relies on the generosity of private donors as well as participants in the annual golf tournament to help send kids to camp each year. Unlike most charities, it does not rely on corporate sponsors.

“This golf tournament is not only a fundraiser, but it’s one of the few times we get to interact with many of the donors who make our camp possible,” said Donna Crump, Parkland’s physical therapy manager and director of Camp I-Thonka-Chi. “Without the generous donations of so many individuals we wouldn’t be able to send the kids to camp with no charge to them.”

Since 1992, Parkland’s burn camp has helped hundreds of children by providing a place that allows them to be, well, just kids. Children ages 6 to 18 years build friendships, improve social skills and simply have fun without being self-conscious of their scars or injuries. Camp is held each year at Camp John Marc in Meridian, Texas, where campers participate in a variety of activities including horseback riding, swimming, fishing, archery, arts and crafts, boating and other activities.

Timarron Country Club is located at 1400 Byron Nelson Parkway, Southlake, Texas 76092. Spots are still available for both morning and afternoon flights.
