Allegations of discrimination in Irving’s housing program

housingStevie Wonder sang a song that says “You took me riding in a rocket and gave me a star but at a half a mile from Heaven, you dropped me back down to this cold, cold world. I wouldn’t do that to a dog.”

Several Hispanic families and their Hispanic-owned real estate company feel this way about the City of Irving’s Housing and Human Services Department (HHS). They have filed HUD Fair Housing Discrimination complaints alleging the City of Irving’s HHS Department knowingly and deliberately discriminated against these families in denying them the chance to purchase a home administered by HHS designed to help low to moderate income families purchase their first home in Irving.

The HUD complaints allege that these families did all that was requested of them by the City and that these families were repeatedly misled by the City only to find out after waiting without any rhyme or reason that they had to repeat the entire application process because their application expired after waiting for over a year. HSS Department failed to communicate the reasons for the delay to the Realtor and their prospective home buyers.

Some of these families went on a month to month lease based on the assurances from Irving’s HHS Department that they could close on their home within 30 to 90 days. Now after waiting for over a year these families feel they have been harmed and the City of Irving needs to financially compensate them for their loss. Lisette Caraballo, the owner of iRealty and other Realtors from iRealty have worked with all the families from the beginning of the application process and has filed a complaint for torturous business interference and Fair Housing discrimination against the City as well.
