Sen. Ellis statement on Houston payday and auto title lending ordinance

image001(Austin, Texas) – Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) released the following statement on Mayor Annise Parker’s proposed ordinance regulating the payday and auto title lending industries:

“I want to commend Mayor Parker for putting forth the strong ordinance that Houston needs to rein in the predatory practices of payday and auto title lenders in our great city,” said Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston). “A strong ordinance will require these businesses to become better corporate citizens of our community, while curbing the industry’s most egregious practices.”

“Houston has the opportunity to join the other eight Texas cities that have already passed strong ordinances, giving me and my colleagues at the state legislature the push we need to pass statewide regulation that protects all Texans. I urge our city council members to support Mayor Parker and Houston’s most vulnerable citizens by passing this much needed ordinance.”
