Democrats call for Perry to step down following indictment

Governor Rick Perry
Governor Rick Perry

Gilberto Hinojosa, the Texas Democratic Party Chair issued this statement following news Governor Rick Perry was indicated by a state grand jury:

“Governor Rick Perry was just indicted for two counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion. He’s brought dishonor to his office, his family and the state of Texas.

The system brought justice to Rick Perry’s insider politics and political swindling. Rick Perry should step down, immediately.

This type of crony politics has got to go in Texas. This issue doesn’t stop with Governor Perry. Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee for attorney general, is also facing indictment. And Attorney General Greg Abbott has refused to rule on whether Governor Perry can use taxpayer dollars to cover his legal expenses.”

Statement from Matt Angle on Governor Perry’s indictment

Today’s indictment of Rick Perry confirms the corrupt culture of GOP leadership in Texas. Governor Perry’s abuse of power and the protection of insiders over hard working Texas is, unfortunately, business as usual in the Perry/Abbott/Paxton political world.

Perry’s indictment does not stand alone. It shines a light on failed state leaders who should be replaced.”
