Carrollton will continue spraying weather permitting following positive WNV test results

mosquito3-300x190Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) has confirmed the third mosquito trap testing positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) in Carrollton. The trap was collected from the mosquito management area 5B, which is located between Old Denton Road, Whitlock Lane, Josey Lane, and President George Bush Turnpike.  This area can be viewed in greater detail at cityofcarrollton.com/westnile.

The City of Carrollton conducts mosquito trapping in seven areas of the City each week of the mosquito season, April-September, and has collected a total of 128 samples so far this year.

Carrollton Animal Services will conduct ground-based spraying in the neighborhood outlined above, weather permitting on Tuesday, August 19. Spraying will begin around 9:30 p.m. and last until completed.   Spraying will not be conducted in the event of wind speeds in excess of 10 mph or inclement weather.

Scott Hudson, Environmental Services Director, encourages citizens to practice the ‘4Ds’ to reduce the risk of WNV:

  • DEET All Day, Every DayWhenever you’re outside, use insect repellants that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing outside.
  • DRAIN: Remove all areas of standing water in and around your home.
  • DUSK & DAWN: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.
