UNT’s College of Music offers its annual hands-on event for children in grades 2 to 5 who want to learn more about musical instruments on Oct. 11.
The annual Instrument Petting Zoo allows children and their parents to explore the instruments of the orchestra. Members of the North Texas Student Music Educators, who are music students at UNT, teach children how to play woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments.
This year’s event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UNT’s College of Music, 415 Avenue C, Denton. Following a 20-minute concert by top UNT ensembles from the Center for Chamber Music Studies in the Recital Hall, room 301, participants will visit various rooms in the college to try out each instrument.
Participation in the Instrument Petting Zoo is free, however, reservations are required by Oct. 7 (Tuesday). RSVP to music education professor Don Taylor at 940-565-3745 or Don.Taylor@unt.edu. Parents or guardians must accompany the student participants.
This year’s event is sponsored by Pender’s Music Company, Universal Melody Services and Extreme Cuisine Catering.
The Instrument Petting Zoo is one of many community outreach events hosted by the North Texas Student Music Educators and the College of Music. Other events include public library performances, senior citizen outreach and chamber music coaching.
