Black History January 31: Jackie Robinson born 96 years ago

jackie robinsonAs we we enjoy Super Bowl weekend, we pause to look back at the man who changed the face of American sports – Jackie Robinson. Born on January 31, 1919 no professional athlete should ever forget the fact Robinson paved the way for their opportunity and millions as the first player in the Major Leagues playing for the Brooklyn — no not Los Angeles — Dodgers.

Robinson won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1949. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and in 1997, his #42 jersey was retired by all major league teams.

His story was finally brought to the big screen in the 2013 film 42 starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford
