2016 March for Respect

the arc(Dallas, Texas) – March for Respect was created to highlight the contributions and importance of Texan’s with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in the DFW area community. The one mile awareness walk draws more than 5,000 people and will be held on Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown Main Street Garden at 1902 Main Street Dallas, TX 75201.

“The State of Texas has the second highest number of people with disabilities in the nation; however, we rank second-to-last in the amount of money spent on community based services like the services The Arc provides,” executive director of The Arc Brooke Dieterlen says.  “This event is one way of showing these citizens with disabilities that they do matter and there are resources here to help them.”

The Arc- Collin, Dallas & Rockwall Counties as well as several other agencies that provide services to those with I/DD in our communities are collaborating to make this event bigger than ever. There will be face painting, balloon artists, entertainment as well as booths for agencies to provide free information to the public on services being offered throughout the Metroplex.

The large turnout for the March of Respect shows Texan’s with disabilities that there is a whole city of people promoting respect for them. This event was held for 13 years annually and The Arc- Collin, Dallas & Rockwall Counties is bringing this event back after a two year hiatus due to management changes. The Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 March for Respect is Pettis Wellness Solutions.

About The Arc

The mission of The Arc in Collin, Dallas and Rockwall Counties is to support and empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to improve their quality of life. The Arc was formed in 1951 by a group of parents of children with disabilities who joined forces to fight for their children’s rights to be educated in the public school system. The Arc of today still serves as a voice in the local, state and national community for those with disabilities. Most programs and services take place in local neighborhoods in conjunction with community partners such as schools, churches, and recreation centers.
