The first class of the Lewisville Citizens University came to an end earlier this week, when 12 students went before City Council to graduate.

The Lewisville Citizens University is a 10-month program designed to familiarize residents with the structure, functions and activities of City of Lewisville government, encourage residents to become involved in the City’s government, and enhance their ability to communicate effectively with City officials. City officials will, in turn, gain valuable insights into residents’ priorities and needs from their involvement.

Several members of this first class have been appointed to various City boards and committees. Douglas Hicks, a data analyst, was appointed to the Zoning Board of Adjustment; John Lyng, a mortgage banker, was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission; Gail Robison, a retiree, was appointed to the Library Board; Tona Svoboda, a professional hair designer, was appointed to the Arts Advisory Board; and Deniese Sheppard, an escalations specialist, was appointed to the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Board.

Brandon Jones, a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, also was in this original class, but he left the program to make a successful run for City Council. Jones will be sworn in as the Place 4 representative on May 16. He succeeds Councilman Greg Tierney, who did not seek re-election.

Applications for the next Lewisville Citizens University class are now being accepted. An application can be download from the Citizens University page oncityoflewisville.com. Return the completed application by June 17 to the City Secretary’s Office, City Hall, 151 West Church Street, Lewisville, TX 75057; by fax to 972.219.3412; or by email to jheinze@cityoflewisville.com.

The Lewisville Citizens University curriculum consists of monthly sessions starting in July and continuing through April. Each session will begin at 6 p.m. and end at approximately 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
