As the presidential race begins to hit its homestretch between candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, voters from all around the country begin to pay more attention to the candidates. The summer is a key time for them to decide who they will support before they rush to the polls to cast their vote for the next president of the U.S. this fall. Will Hillary Clinton make history as the first female president in the White House? Will Donald Trump really go from reality TV and the boardroom to the Oval Office? His welcome to Dallas this week was lukewarm at best.
On June 15, Dallas police officers practiced and stage demonstration riot drills in case things became hostile in light of the protesters protesting at Trump’s rallies around the country recently. Given the city’s legacy, they wanted to ensure that any presidential candidate is well protected while in Dallas.
Trump’s visit to Dallas was on the one-year anniversary of the launch of his presidential campaign. After being rejected by other cities and venues, the rally was held at Gilley’s on Lamar south of downtown Dallas and just a few blocks from Dallas Police headquarters.
According to KERA news, TCU’s Political Scientist Jim Riddlesperger said, “Texas has a long history being a political piggy bank for both Democrats and Republicans because very few races in Texas are competitive.”
Riddlesperger also added, “National Republicans come to Texas and National Democrats come to Texas as well because they know that the money bags come from Texas.” Certainly money was a factor for Trump, his campaign has largely been self-funded, but rumors have persisted recently that the coffers are getting low.
Before the rally started, Rep. Michael Burgess had positive things to say about Donald Trump.
“I am in full support of Trump, he is a great man and great leader and I think he will make an excellent president.”
Over 3,000 people came in supporting Donald Trump at his rally. This included protesters, some of which were escorted out of Gilley’s. The rally lasted only an hour, but Trump had a lot to say about the presidential election.
“I’m looking forward to the debate with crooked Hillary. We are going to bring jobs back and that’s something that Bernie Sanders wouldn’t be able to do if he was president. President Obama is blaming guns for everything, but I’m going to save your 2nd amendment folks and Hillary wants to abolish the 2nd amendment.”
Trump also talked about what was wrong with our country.
“The problem with our county is that we have leaders that give up. They have given up on so many different things like trade, the borders and Isis completely. People don’t respect our country, our leaders or us anymore, but that’s going to change when I become president of the U.S not Hillary.”
