Facebook cloning a tool in identity theft?

facebookEditor’s Note: I receive at least three per cloned requests per week over the last month. Twice in recent months from two deceased friends, including one former popular Dallas Morning News writer.  Don’t just accept invites because they are a familiar face.

(FOX – Fargo) A new Facebook scam is making the rounds on social media, where profiles are being cloned.

The next time you get a friend request from someone you’re already friends with, make sure to think twice before accepting them.

It could be a scammer posing as your friend or even you.

“I have fallen into the trap of accepting a request from a friend that I’m already friends with. In those cases, I try to go in and reset the password and try to be as safe as you can be online,” says Erik Anderson of Frazee, Minn.

Fargo Police say posting less information about yourself will help you in the long run.

“There’s really no need to put where you’re employed or how old you are. Or your phone number or address. It’s one thing to put where your city is so maybe it’s easier to connect with people,” says Fargo Police Crime PreventOfficer Jessica Schindeldecker.

What has been happening is the scammers takes your photo, your information from your page and add your friends.

They could be posing as you to ask for money or even steal your identity.

“That is concerning that someone can take my information but the biggest thing is, just being aware who I’m friends with and making sure that’s a safe choice,” says Kelly Fitzgerald of Boston, Mass.

If you think you’ve been hacked, change your password and tighten your security settings to where only your friends can see your posts.
