The Old Red Museum of Dallas is sponsoring an exhibit of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter’s 87-year history starting with an opening reception on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 3 p.m.

Dedicated to inspire and educate visitors about the rich and varied cultural, economic, political and social history of the area, the Old Red Museum serves as a symbol of Dallas heritage. Built in 1892, the beautifully restored Old Red Courthouse contains some of Dallas’ most fascinating historical artifacts. There is a special exhibit gallery on the first floor, while the second floor is filled with exhibits, 41-touch screen computers, an educational learning center and four mini theatres.

Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was established in Dallas, Texas on June 6, 1929. Mrs. Florence Harlee Phelps, a Howard University graduate, initiated the effort to establish in her hometown a chapter of the first Greek letter sorority for African American women.

From its beginning, the chapter has continuously given college scholarships to Dallas students. Other programs have included: vocational counseling and guidance for high school students; health and other social service initiatives for women and children; support of the African American family; and support to developing art, cultural and educational institutions and groups.

The exhibition of the chapter’s 87-year history in the Dallas community is scheduled to run until April 30, 2017.  The admission fee to the exhibit is $8.00.
