A former NFL journeyman player for the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins and four other teams, Edawn Louis Coughman, is facing charges after being accused of faking a hate crime and robbing his own business.
The police received a phone tip of a possible burglary in progress on Wednesday, Sept. 11. When they arrived in the area, they pulled over a black truck which did not have a license plate and discovered Coughman was the driver. A search of his truck uncovered several flat-screen TVs.
Then when the police visited his restaurant, walls were painted with grafitti which included racial slurs such as “monkey” and the N-word. Of course for good measure MAGA was thrown in. The paint appeared to be fresh to them, and Coughman’s hands contained fresh black spray paint.
TheRoot quoted the Gwinnett County Police’s statement, “It appears as though Edawn conjured a premeditated plan to damage his own property, attempt to make it appear as a hate crime, file a claim with his insurance company, and sell off the undamaged appliances and electronics.”
Supposedly, although he had not called the police, Coughman had already reported the incident to the insurance company. His vehicle was impounded and Thursday Coughman was arrested. Not a new experience for him as he apparently has a long rap sheet.
Released on bond, Coughman is now facing three charges: insurance fraud, making a false report and for removing his license plate.
