Dallas County under Shelter in Place order because of COVID-19

Dallas County Commissioner Clay Jenkins this evening has issued a Shelter in Place requirement for residents. One of the key reasons cited is the need to avoid running out hospital beds in the county. Also, confirmed cases doubled on Sunday.

Shelter in Place means non-essential workers should stay at home. Employers are encouraged to use a forehead thermometer to make sure the worker does not have a fever.  If they do, they cannot work on that day.

Dallas County has more than 2 million people, however, the Metroplex encompasses more than 7 million of the 30 million in the state according to Jenkins.

The commissioner was hopeful Governor Gregg Abbot would impose similar restrictions statewide. However, the governor stated during his press conference that of the 254 counties in the state, more than 200 have no reported cases. He added that what is right for Houston and Dallas is not necessarily right statewide. The governor stated local officials have the authority to make a decision they believe is best for their community.

Residents can go outside for exercise but are required to maintain six feet distance. Other restrictions include

– no gatherings outside
– all religious services will only be allowed via video or audio
– no elective medical or dental procedures are allowed
